vat savitri vrat katha | वटसावित्री कथा

Vat Savitri Vrat is a traditional Hindu festival observed by married women in various parts of India, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. The festival is dedicated to Savitri, a legendary Hindu woman known for her devotion and courage.

Vat Savitri information

The story of Savitri and Satyavan is derived from the ancient Hindu epic Mahabharata. According to the tale, Savitri, a beautiful princess, chose Satyavan as her husband, even though he was destined to die within a year of their marriage. Savitri's love and devotion compelled her to marry him.

After one year of married life, Satyavan fell unconscious under a banyan tree. Yama, the god of death, arrived to claim Satyavan's soul. Savitri, aware of the prophecy, followed Yama and pleaded for her husband's life. Despite Yama's initial refusal, Savitri's unwavering determination and devotion deeply moved him. Impressed by her virtues, Yama granted her a boon, with the exception of her husband's life.

Savitri cleverly asked for the well-being and prosperity of her father-in-law, who was left without an heir. Yama, considering her choice to be wise, granted her request. Savitri continued to follow Yama as he returned Satyavan's soul to his body. Satyavan regained consciousness, and both Savitri and Satyavan returned to their kingdom.

The Vat Savitri Vrat is observed by married women to honor Savitri's devotion and pray for the well-being and longevity of their husbands. On this day, women tie threads around the trunk of a banyan tree, fast from sunrise to sunset, worship the tree, make offerings, and listen to the story of Savitri and Satyavan. It is believed that by observing this vrat with devotion, women can ensure the well-being and longevity of their husbands.

The festival is usually celebrated on the Amavasya (new moon day) of the Jyeshtha month in the Hindu calendar, which typically falls in May or June. It holds significant importance for married women as they express their love, dedication, and commitment to their husbands and seek blessings for their marital bliss.

Please note that variations in the Vat Savitri Katha and rituals associated with the festival may exist in different regions.
